The agreement will benefit users in the document publishing and print-on-demand (POD) marketplaces by allowing them to automate their printing environments while continuing to utilize the most popular electronic publishing An umbrella term for non-paper publishing, which includes publishing online or on media such as CDs and DVDs.  document creation tools.

The two companies also announced that Adobe will make available its Acrobat products for IBM's OS/2 Warp The client version of the OS/2 operating system.  on Intel and PowerPC platforms. Additionally, IBM will pre-load Adobe Acrobat Reader, which allows users to view, navigate and print documents created with Acrobat software, onto IBM commercial desktop PCs this fall. As a result of the alliance between the two companies, customers will now have a compatible and integrated viewing, printing and archiving solution combining IBM AFP, Adobe PostScript and Adobe Acrobat technologies.

Adobe PostScript software is widely used for commercial publishing and print-on-demand, or "just in time," printing. The joint development agreement will provide users of Adobe PostScript software with the print management capabilities of IBM's AFP industry standard error recovery, resource management and multiple platform support. Printers and publishers using PostScript software with IBM's AFP software and printer products will additionally benefit from improved electronic job submission, automated print shop management, and easy distribution of documents across networks and computing platforms.

IBM has recently introduced several new hardware and software products for the publishing and print-on-demand marketplace, including a new color digital press that prints full-color variable data at 70 impressions-per-minute with near offset press quality. These products will be able to print PostScript documents through the integrated solutions being developed with Adobe.

Dr. James T. Vanderslice, general manager of the IBM Printing Systems Co., addressed the audience here today and said, "IBM has joined with a technology leader in the electronic publishing marketplace to provide users with the flexibility of Adobe's PostScript language and Acrobat electronic document interchange capabilities in combination with our proven AFP software and printer architecture. And with the Acrobat Reader pre-loaded on IBM commercial desktop PCs, together we provide users with built-in access to the growing number of Portable Document Format (file format) Portable Document Format - (PDF) The native file format for Adobe Systems' Acrobat. PDF is the file format for representing documents in a manner that is independent of the original application software, hardware, and operating system used to create those documents.  (PDF (Portable Document Format) The de facto standard for document publishing from Adobe. "Adobe is impressed with what IBM has done in managing high volume printing and the technologies it will bring to the electronic publishing and print-on-demand marketplaces," said Charles M. Geschke, president of Adobe Systems. "We look to this agreement to provide customers with a new level of electronic document distribution and print management capabilities."

Under terms of the agreement, IBM and Adobe say their users will benefit as follows:

-- Users will have access to sophisticated tools and technologies to improve the quality of the documents they print and the productivity of their printing environments.

-- Adobe PostScript customers can use AFP to add structure for easy management of PostScript and PDF documents.

-- Adobe Acrobat customers will be able to use IBM's print-on-demand products to easily store and retrieve documents for viewing or modification, and print PDF and PostScript documents.

-- IBM users will now have full fidelity printing of PostScript documents on IBM printers.

-- Purchasers of IBM commercial desktop PCs will receive a full-function PDF viewer built-in starting this fall.
