IBM Unveils Ultra-Thin Server for Internet Shops.

SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 1999--

IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  today announced a new Netfinity server designed specifically for the rapidly growing Internet service provider Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.

) market. The Netfinity 4000R, measures just 1-3/4 inches thick -- the thinnest Wintel server introduced by a major systems vendor -- and packs more than double the number of processors in a standard rack environment as competing systems.

Also today, IBM introduced the RS/6000 Model B50, an ISP-ready server from the RS/6000 family, the world's most powerful supercomputers (see separate release). The Netfinity and RS/6000 servers are part of IBM's overall strategy to provide comprehensive solutions to Internet and telecommunications companies.

"The market for Internet-based applications is expected to fuel a demand for hardware, software and services in excess of $15B by 2002," said James Gargan, marketing director, Netfinity Servers. We're aggressively going after this market -- combining server technology, software testing Software testing is the process used to measure the quality of developed computer software. Usually, quality is constrained to such topics as correctness, completeness, security, but can also include more technical requirements as described under the ISO standard ISO 9126, such  programs and ready to run solutions to give ISPs the broadest choice of hardware, software and services available for the Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. Solutions for Fastest Time to Revenue

Together with key software vendors including Inktomi, Resonate, Real Networks, SunNetscape, Lotus and Microsoft, IBM is validating popular Internet software on the Netfinity 4000R server. Validation assures ISPs that programs such as caching, load balancing The fine tuning of a computer system, network or disk subsystem in order to more evenly distribute the data and/or processing across available resources. For example, in clustering, load balancing might distribute the incoming transactions evenly to all servers, or it might redirect them , media streaming, and other Web applications critical to their success are supported and easily configured for their environment.

"The Inktomi Traffic Server Network cache platform, running on IBM's new Netfinity 4000R server, enables service providers to build new services and intelligence into the edge of their networks," said Paul Gauthier Paul Gauthier is the name of:

, Chief Technology Officer, Inktomi. "The combined IBM-Inktomi solution provides compelling performance, flexibility and new network services to help ISPs manage explosive traffic growth and generate new revenue streams."

"The delivery of a variety services and applications is an area of terrific opportunity for ISPs," said Mark Chestnut, Director, Network Solutions Group, Microsoft. "IBM's use of Microsoft Windows See Windows.

NT Server for the Netfinity 4000R server provides a flexible and scaleable choice for ISPs who require services to enable them to meet the increasing needs of their customers."

The server is backed by services designed to let customers use their systems right out of the box.

New Netfinity 4000R Server

The Netfinity 4000R server enables ISPs and ASPs to offer their customers content-rich services, high volume e-commerce applications, storage-intense Web hosting Making a Web site available on the Internet. Many ISPs host a few personal Web pages for an individual at no additional cost above the monthly service fee, but the address is subordinate to the ISP; for example, www.friendlyisp.com/pat_smith. , and network security.

Key features include:

- Ideal sized 1 3/4"(1U) packaging providing maximum computing

power per square foot and optimum scalability - up two Intel 500 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. (1) processors per unit -- providing the

capability for 84 processors per industry standard rack - maximum 2GB memory per unit - Supports up to 1.5 Terabytes of storage - Supports Windows and Linux environments

Options by IBM

Options by IBM is offering several upgrades that complement the IBM Netfinity 4000R server including: enterprise racks, memory, additional and larger hard drives as well as RAID and SCSI adapters. All Netfinity Options for the IBM Netfinity 4000R should be ordered at time of purchase and installed by authorized IBM dealers and resellers.

IBM Netfinity Servers

Netfinity servers are armor plated with advanced technologies such as Light Path Diagnostics and 'Chipkill' memory adopted from IBM's big iron heritage. The Netfinity X-Architecture provides a design blueprint for migrating these mainframe attributes to industry standard servers. Since 1998, Netfinity servers have set over 42 performance records including seven number-one benchmarks.
