IBM TO CREATE ONLINE EXCHANGE FOR COMPUTER PARTS.


In a response to similar efforts by its major rivals, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , the world's largest computer maker, has initiated agreements with major partners to establish an online business exchange for the buying and selling of semiconductors and other electronic parts over an Internet Internet

Publicly accessible computer network connecting many smaller networks from around the world. It grew out of a U.S. Defense Department program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), established in 1969 with connections between computers at the
 based network.

Agreements have already been reached with Nortel Networks (Nortel Networks Limited, Brampton, Ontario, www.nortelnetworks.com) A world leader in telecommunications products, which includes switching, wireless and broadband systems for service providers and carriers, telephones and systems for residential and business users, computer telephony  Corp. and Toshiba Corp. with the group to be named E2Open.com.

The establishment of this IBM led consortium follows an announcement a few weeks back by Compaq Computer Corp., Gateway, and Hewlett-Packard for their own Internet exchange See IXP and NAP. .

Negotiations are also underway with Nokia, Ericsson, and Motorola and IBM is also having discussions with Phillips.

It is expected that the exchange will become operational this summer.
