IBM TO BEGIN MAKING ENHANCED PERFORMANCE CHIPS.IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) Corp. researchers have developed a method to boost the performance of microprocessors This is a list of microprocessors. IBM plans to announce that it will soon begin manufacturing copper chips with a material known as low-k dielectric dielectric (dī'ĭlĕk`trĭk), material that does not conduct electricity readily, i.e., an insulator (see insulation). A good dielectric should also have other properties: It must resist breakdown under high voltages; it should not , a polymer-based material that effectively seals the area around the chip's wiring. This can help prevent so-called cross-talk, in which signals travelling down one microscopic microscopic /mi·cro·scop·ic/ (mi?kro-skop´ik) 1. of extremely small size; visible only by the aid of the microscope. 2. pertaining or relating to a microscope or to microscopy. wire are detected by adjacent wires. IBM said the low-k dielectric helps the company solve signal interference problems. Such problems are increasing as chips pack a greater number of circuits. The new process can boost computing computing - computer speed and performance of the chips by as much as 30 percent, IBM said. The company said it would begin building chips with the dielectric process next year. The chips will be designed for Internet servers and networking equipment, which require high performance and low power consumption. |
