IBM SHIPS MORE THAN 250,000 1-GB, 3.5-INCH DRIVES IN 1992 LEADS INDUSTRY IN 3.5-INCH DRIVE MARKET

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM's ADSTAR business unit today announced that it shipped more than 250,000 1-gigabyte 3.5- inch hard disk drives in 1992, demonstrating wide customer acceptance of the drives and IBM's leadership in this arena.
IBM's leadership in the sale of 1-GB 3.5-inch drives also is highlighted in an estimate released today by InfoCorp (see note), a San Jose-based market research group, which indicates that ADSTAR shipped 61 percent of the total drives delivered in 1992, and 31 percent of the OEM drives shipped. The study also places IBM ahead of ten other companies, including Digital Equipment Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., Seagate Technology Inc., and Toshiba Corp., in both total and OEM shipments.
"The challenge in providing the 1-GB 3.5-inch drives was that customer demand exceeded our ability to manufacture them, especially in the initial phase of shipment," said Ray AbuZayyad, ADSTAR vice president and general manager. "We are delighted with the positive response to the 1-GB drives, and hope to provide similar numbers of 2- GB, 3.5-inch drives in 1993 while meeting customer demand in a timely fashion."
These drives are being integrated by a number of leading system manufacturers. They are available through ADSTAR and Anthem Electronics, Inc. a national distributor for IBM ADSTAR products.
