IBM SHIPS INDUSTRY'S FASTEST 386SX PROCESSOR; LEADERSHIP TECHNOLOGY RECEIVES EXCELLENT REVIEWS

          IBM SHIPS INDUSTRY'S FASTEST 386SX PROCESSOR;
        LEADERSHIP TECHNOLOGY RECEIVES EXCELLENT REVIEWS
    WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM today confirmed it began shipping in December the industry's fastest 386SX microprocessor as an upgrade to its popular Personal System/2(A) Model 57 SX. The new upgrade option utilizes the powerful new IBM 386SLC processor, designed and manufactured in IBM's Burlington, Vt., semiconductor facility.
    The IBM 386SLC chip powers the PS/2(A) Cached Processor Option, which boosts performance of the PS/2 Model 57 SX by up to 88 percent. Customers can run popular programs, such as Lotus 1-2-3(B) or AutoCAD(B) for OS/2(A), faster than with many 386DX systems.
    Leading trade publication product reviews have extolled the chip's performance. One reviewer wrote: "IBM's new custom 386SLC processor lived up to its advance billing, blazing through some tasks nearly twice as fast as the Intel Corp. 386SX that powers the top-selling class of PCs."
    Two other product review laboratories concluded the processor's performance rivaled that of a 20 MHz 486SX system.
    "The processor upgrade offers significant value to our customers and definitely changes the competitive playing field in the SX market," said Sam M. Inman III, president of IBM's National Distribution Division.
    The IBM-exclusive processor will be standard on the PS/2 Ultimedia Model M57 SLC, the first PS/2 with integrated multimedia capability, which will ship in March 1992.
    The 386SLC, designed, developed and manufactured by IBM under a long-standing agreement with Intel(B), has the same 32-bit internal, 16-bit external design as the Intel 386SX and is fully compatible with the Intel 386 architecture.
    IBM designed the 386SLC with 8 kilobytes (KB) of internal cache and an internal cache controller, which improves performance by accessing data from high speed cache memory rather than system memory, whenever possible. Performance has been further enhanced by optimizing commonly used instructions.
    "I think the 386SLC is a very important derivative that will play an important role in the market," said Aaron Goldberg of International Data Corporation.
    The option card, which is priced at $780, installs easily in the math coprocessor socket on the Model 57 SX system board.
     The Cached Processor Option is available through IBM Authorized Advanced Products Dealers (APDS), Industry Remarketers and directly from IBM.
