IBM OS/2 2.0 CONTINUES TO REAP TOP HONORS FROM COMPUTER INDUSTRY PRESS

SOMERS, N.Y., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM Corporation (NYSE: IBM) today announced that its advanced operating system for 32-bit PCs, OS/2(Note A) 2.0, has been reaping in the awards. Developed and marketed by IBM's Personal Software Products (PSP) division, OS/2 2.0 just received its most recent accolade from industry-publication Corporate Computing, which designated the operating system one of the computer industry's "Best Buys for 1993." This brings to five the number of industry awards the operating system has won in just the last two months.
Specific honors and awards presented to IBM OS/2 2.0 to date are:
-- PC Magazine, Dec. 22, 1992, "Technical Excellence" Award Winner, "Operating Systems and Software Standards"
-- Information Week, Dec. 22, 1992, "1992 Top Products --The 10 Most Likely to Succeed"
-- PC World, December 1992, "PC Industry Achievement" Award for "Most Promising Newcomer, Software"
-- PC/Computing, December 1992, "Most Valuable Product" (MVP) Award for "Operating System/Environment"
-- Corporate Computing, January 1993, "Best Buy for 1993"
"It's gratifying to receive such high praise from the editors and readers who reflect the overall direction of the personal computer market," said John R. Patrick, PSP's vice president of sales and marketing. "We expect this momentum to build in 1993 as users and enterprises continue to demand the ease of use and performance capabilities of a 32-bit operating system that's compatible with an extremely broad range of existing application software."
To date, more than 1,200 applications from independent software vendors (ISVs) that exploit OS/2 2.0's advanced features are shipping, in addition to the tens of thousands of DOS, Windows(Note B) and OS/2 applications available. Moreover, nearly 80 OEMs worldwide have contracts in place to preload, distribute or bundle OS/2 with their products.
OS/2 2.0 is the award-winning advanced operating system for 32-bit personal computers that helps protect customers' investments in existing software by enabling them to run tens of thousands of DOS, Windows and OS/2 applications seamlessly on the desktop.
This robust platform offers superior technology, including an easy-to-use graphical user interface, called the Workplace Shell, true preemptive multitasking that allows customers to run multiple software programs, concurrently, and Crash Protection(A), which guards against one application being able to bring down the entire system.
