IBM INTRODUCES MULTIMEDIA SPEECHVIEWER II FOR SPEECH THERAPY

IBM INTRODUCES MULTIMEDIA SPEECHVIEWER II FOR SPEECH THERAPY
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- For most children learning to speak is a natural part of growing up, but for some children and adults it's very hard work.
Today IBM announces a multimedia product that speech and language pathologists can use to help people with speech impairments develop their language skills.
The IBM Independence Series SpeechViewer II is a package of software and accessories that makes learning language skills easier, more personalized and more fun. For example, it uses bright colors and animated graphics to motivate and reward users.
Exercises on pitch, loudness, voicing (vocal chord vibrations), vowel and consonant pronunciation, syllable/word pronunciation and speech timing help persons with language impairments improve their skills. The new product complements the more basic SpeechViewer announced in 1988.
 How It Works
First, the user speaks into the microphone. SpeechViewer II then analyzes speech signal characteristics such as pitch, loudness, voicing, intonation and spectra (the distribution of energy across a sound frequency range). This data activates playful, gamelike animations providing immediate feedback. For example, a child who correctly pronounces the consonant "S" sees a monkey climb a palm tree and drop a coconut. This encourages the child to repeat the sound correctly and continue to progress.
The user's performance in each exercise is tracked automatically and can be saved and integrated into various reports requested by the speech and language pathologist. Clinicians create user profiles to customize programs to an individual's specific needs. This reduces the setup time required for each clinical exercise.
SpeechViewer II is the sixth product in IBM's Independence Series, designed to help people with special needs and is part of IBM's Ultimedia family of multimedia products.
 Comprehensive Package
SpeechViewer II runs on DOS with most IBM Personal System/2 and Personal System/1 computers. The system requires a color monitor, at least 640K of memory and a 20MB hardfile plus an available expansion slot. In addition, the M-Audio Capture and Playback Adapter is required to accept and process speech input.
SpeechViewer II includes: the program software on four diskettes; an instructional videotape; a user's guide; set-up reference card; hand-held microphone; two headset microphones with an amplifier; loudspeaker; power adapter and cables.
Available on March 31, 1992, SpeechViewer II costs $2,130. An educational allowance is available to qualifying educational institutions. Order directly by contacting your local IBM office (call 1-800-IBM-3333 for branch information) or by contacting The Psychological Corporation at 1-800-228-0752.
