IBM Global Services Division and Mastech create Year 2000 solution partnership.
Mastech To Join Elite Corps of Global Business Solution Partners
Mastech Corp. (NASDAQ:MAST) announced today that it has become an IBM Year 2000 Global Services Partner.
The relationship means that Mastech will be among a very small group of software services firms to provide mission critical century date change services for IBM customers. Mastech's global application development services will be offered through a variety of IBM channels including a network of international competency centers located strategically around the world.
IBM, a leading developer and provider of tools for Year 2000 assessment, conversion and evaluation, has selected Mastech to provide expertise and people to perform the complex task of converting systems for its customers. The combined strength of Mastech's service professionals and IBM's tools and methodologies creates a powerful solution for the Year 2000 challenge facing public and private enterprises around the world.
The CDC, or Year 2000, problem exists because millions of computers will not be able to distinguish between the 20th and the 21st centuries due to programming characteristics in many computer applications. Date dependent data running on tens of thousands of software programs will become corrupted if systems changes aren't made. The Gartner Group estimates that as many as 60 percent - 90 percent of business applications could fail due to invalid date computations.
"Given the magnitude and scope of the Year 2000 challenge, there simply won't be enough programmers to assist everyone," says IBM's Steve Kagan. Kagan, vice president, Year 2000 Services and U.S. Competency Center, added, "IBM wants to ensure that its customers have effective tools and services at their disposal. We've partnered with Mastech because its talent and global resources help us provide our customers with the very best."
"Basic supply-demand economics will place computer services expertise at a premium over the next three years," says Ashok Trivedi, Mastech's president and co-chairman. "Our professionals are well versed in IBM's tools and methodologies which make the partnership a great fit for both companies. IBM will be able to leverage Mastech's global presence."
The company's software facilities in Bangalore India will soon have the capability to employ 1,500 programmers dedicated to Year 2000 work. Mastech's advanced telecommunications and technology infrastructure provides seamless communication and workflow among its operations in the Americas, Europe, Asia and software factories in India.
Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Mastech provides information technology services and solutions to large organizations around the world.
