RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK Research Triangle Park, research, business, medical, and educational complex situated in central North Carolina. It has an area of 6,900 acres (2,795 hectares) and is 8 × 2 mi (13 × 3 km) in size. Named for the triangle formed by Duke Univ. , N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2004

IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  today announced new models of its flagship ThinkPad T Series notebook computers, including models with the first 15-inch displays for the series -- a new form factor complemented by award-winning ThinkVantage Technologies in wireless, security and PC management.

Optimized for performance and portability, these new 15-inch models provide increased flexibility and comfort with larger, brighter and higher resolution screens. Select models of the 15-inch ThinkPad T42 and T42p come with "Flexview" technology, offering 170-degree viewing angles in all directions.

"IBM is committed to providing customers with the best computing experience possible," said Bob Galush, vice president, product marketing, IBM Personal Computing Refers to users working on their own computers rather than a terminal to a mainframe. Sometimes, the term refers to using computers at home for work and/or entertainment in contrast to business use only. See personal computer.  Division. "Customer feedback indicates that a larger screen would be ideal for engineers, students and mobile workers of all kinds. Now, IBM's ThinkPad T42 and T42p notebook computers will offer industry-leading battery life in a thin and light package with a desktop-PC-sized screen. Together with IBM ThinkVantage Technologies, such as the new Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore, these models take ThinkPad to a whole new level of mobility."

Available in 14 and 15-inch screen models, the ThinkPad T42 and T42p are ideal machines for mobile users in need of a lightweight notebook with extensive functionality. Models of the ThinkPad T42 and T42p will be available with Intel's new mobile Pentium See Pentium M.  M processors, improving mobile performance and battery life. The new ThinkPad T42 and T42p will be available with Intel Pentium M A family of CPUs from Intel that are part of its Centrino brand for mobile computing. Introduced in 2003 at speeds up to 1.6 GHz, it was formerly code named "Banias." Introduced in 2004, the second-generation Pentium M (code named "Dothan") uses the same chip package but is built with 90  Processor 735, 745, and 755 technology (1) featuring 2MB of L2 cache (Level 2 cache) A memory bank built into the CPU chip, packaged within the same module or built on the motherboard. The L2 cache feeds the L1 cache, and its memory is slower than L1 memory. The L2 cache feeds the L1 cache, which feeds the processor. , as well as the Intel Pentium M 1.5GHz processor with 1MB of L2 cache.

Power of a Mobile Workstation

Combining the mobility of a ThinkPad notebook with high-speed graphic performance, the ThinkPad T42p mobile workstations offer a robust graphics capacity, raw processing power and long battery life. With the new 15-inch enlarged screen size, the T42p is the ideal solution for displaying detailed designs, dramatic digital content and multimedia projects and high-powered engineering applications -- in the office or on the road. An extensive independent software vendor testing and certification process verifies that ThinkPad mobile workstations can run some of the most demanding, graphics-intensive workstation applications.

Select models of the ThinkPad T42p, the thinnest and lightest mobile workstation in the industry, will offer Intel's Pentium M Processor 745 or 755, ATI (ATI Technologies Inc., Markham Ontario, http://ati.amd.com) A leading manufacturer of graphics chips and display adapters. Founded in 1985 by K. Y. Ho, Benny Lau and Lee Lau, ATI chips and boards are widely used by OEMs.  Mobility FireGL T2 Graphics with OpenGL support, "Flexview" technology, UXGA (Ultra XGA) A screen resolution of 1600x1200 pixels.  (1600 x 1200) resolution, 802.11 a/b/g and the entire portfolio of IBM ThinkVantage Technologies. These include IBM's Embedded Security Subsystem, an integrated security chip and downloadable software to protect company's data, secure passwords and guard against unauthorized user access.

ThinkVantage Technologies Rescue Data and Save Time

The ThinkPad T42 and T42p come equipped with a variety of IBM ThinkVantage Technologies that improve security, provide choice and ease-of-use in wireless capabilities, and simplify PC management for IT staff. IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore provides a set of self-recovery tools to help users diagnose, get help and recover from a software crash, even if the primary operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
will not boot. This one-button solution helps with everything from easy system backup and the restoration of a corrupted or deleted file, to recovery from a complete software failure.

Because today's mobile systems are at a continual risk of being dropped and damaged, IBM is offering the Active Protection System on the ThinkPad T42 and T42p to help protect user's data. Similar to the technology used in automobiles to deploy airbags, the Active Protection System uses a microchip on the system board to detect system acceleration (such as in a fall) and responds by temporarily parking the drive's read/write head A device that reads (senses) and writes (records) data on a magnetic disk or tape. For writing, the surface of the disk or tape is moved past the read/write head. By discharging electrical impulses at the appropriate times, bits are recorded as tiny, magnetized spots of positive or . This rapid response can help prevent hard drive crashes that occur in some falls, helping to prevent total data loss and ultimately reduce downtime.

Designed with mobile users in mind, the new ThinkPad T42 and T42p notebook computers feature high-performance wireless networking See wireless network.  with integrated wireless, including Intel's 802.11 b/g (2) wireless on select models. Included on both new models is IBM Access Connections 3.0, a software solution that saves users' wireless and wired network settings and simplifies the management of multiple connectivity environments.

Leadership Design

IBM was one of the first adopters of the 9.5 mm optical drive, the Ultrabay Slim. Today, IBM is introducing the new ThinkPad Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive on select models of the ThinkPad T42 and T42p. Providing the slimmest and most functional IBM DVD recordable DVD recordable and DVD rewritable refer to DVD optical disc formats that can be recorded (written, "burned"), either or rewritable (write multiple times) format written by laser, as compared to DVD-ROM, which is mass-produced by pressing.  drive ever, the ThinkPad Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive reads and writes most recording formats and helps users to archive and access data, video, photo and music files on high capacity DVDs or CDs.

Approximately 1.2-inches thin (3) and weighing less than 5.3 pounds (4), IBM's newest 15-inch ThinkPad boasts one of the longest system battery lives in the industry, at up to 6.4 hours (5) on select models. The ThinkPad T42 and T42p's various battery options deliver all-day computing, offering up to 9 hours of optional battery life.
