IBM ANNOUNCES CURRENT OFFICEVISION/400 WORKGROUP PROGRAM; PROVIDES CLIENT/SERVER FUNCTIONALITY FOR MIDRANGE OFFICE SYSTEMS USERS

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM announced today the Current OfficeVision/400 (see note A) (OV/400 /see note A/) Workgroup Program -- a Windows (see note B)-based client/server application that provides PC users with an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) to AS/400 (note A)-based office functions and a personal information manager (PIM).
Office workers will have a consistent look-and-feel across IBM's mainframe and midrange OfficeVision products as the Current Workgroup Program is currently available on OfficeVision/Virtual Machine (note A) (OV/VM /note A/) and IBM intends to provide similar function on OfficeVision/Multiple Virtual Storage (note A) (OV/MVS /note A/).
"Current OV/400 establishes a new degree of office automation productivity, and enables organizations to distribute traditional midrange-based office functions in a client/server environment to leverage users' desktop computing capabilities," said Dick Sullivan, Director of Office and Publishing Marketing, IBM US. "Current OV/400 provides the best of both worlds -- the AS/400 system for centralized or distributed management of key business resources, and a PC-based, GUI- driven tool to organize end-user information."
Current OV/400 Workgroup Program combines the power of OV/400 with the flexibility of a personal information manager to perform tasks such as sending electronic mail, scheduling appointments and meetings, processing documents, managing projects, and keeping to-do lists through a graphical interface.
The Current OV/400 Workgroup Program is ideal for remote users and other workers who require access to AS/400-based data but cannot link their PCs to the host on a continuous basis. While disconnected from the AS/400, users can process downloaded mail and calendar items, documents, and PC files at the workstation. Upon reconnection, the processed information will be synchronized on the AS/400 server and appropriately transferred throughout the company or enterprise.
In addition, the Current OV/400 Workgroup Program enables users to import and export data in ASCII, dBase (note B) or DIF formats for use with the system. Current OV/400's Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) integrates information generated in Current with other Windows applications for enhanced flexibility and ease-of-use.
The Current OV/400 Workgroup Program runs on IBM's OV/400 Version 2, Release 2, and will run with the recently-announced OV/400 Version 2, Release 3. The Current OV/400 Workgroup Program requires an IBM PS/2 (note A) or IBM-compatible PC 286 model or above, and a minimum of 4MB main storage and 6MB free disk storage. The Current OV/400 Workgroup Program on the AS/400 host requires OV/400 Version 2, Release 2 or Release 3 (when available) and on the workstation, IBM DOS (note A) Version 3.3 or higher and Microsoft Windows 3.0 or 3.1, IBM PC Support Version 2 Release 2 or Release 3.
Current OfficeVision/400 Workgroup Program pricing is available upon request from your local IBM marketing representative.
