IBM, Motorola, Canon, and Firepower demonstrate CompCore's SoftPEG, the first software MPEG player for the Power PC, at PCExpo.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 1995--IBM, Motorola, Canon, and Firepower are each demonstrating SoftPEG, the first software MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  player available for the PowerPC, at PC Expo this week.

Designed by CompCore Multimedia Inc., SoftPEG provides full MPEG picture and sound playback through a computer's existing monitor and sound card.

"SoftPEG gives a Power PC computer user the ability to view any MPEG-1 encoded file, without having to buy an additional MPEG graphics card," explained George Haber, president of CompCore Multimedia. "Because it is a low cost, software solution, most Power PC users will soon have the option to access a wealth of high quality moving picture information."

standard for digital compression and delivery of VHS quality video and CD quality audio. MPEG technology is used by video and interactive CD-ROMs, archives, software applications, and games. It allows more data to be stored in less space, and data to be transmitted across networks in less time. SoftPEG decodes MPEG-1 and displays 30 frame-per-second smooth, fully synchronized audio/video on Power PC, Pentium, MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. Having licensed its hardware MPEG core designs to NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

, Hitachi, Cirrus Logic, Zilog and a number of other electronics companies, CompCore is now making available software solutions for licensing and distribution.

An active and voting member of the ISO-US X3L3 MPEG Committee, CompCore is currently involved in many MPEG standardization efforts, including the MPEG Intellectual Property Rights Working Group, the Open MPEG-1 Initiative, and the VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association, Milpitas, CA, www.vesa.org) A membership organization founded in 1989 that sets interface standards for the PC, workstation and computing environments.
