IABC/San Antonio (Texas) members Joy Capps-Powell and Lisa Owens, both members of the IABC/Southern Region board, established the IABC/ Southern Region Katrina Relief Fund to help the 39 members of IABC/New Orleans who suffered hurricane-related losses. Donations from individual members and some two dozen chapters, including ones in France and Australia, raised more than US$6,500, surpassing the goal by 30 percent. The money continued to come in months after Katrina. IABC members also donated services and items, from business suits and computers to office space and housing. "I personally received so many e-mails and phone calls from IABCers all over the world asking how they could help," Owens says. "Truly amazing." IABC/New Orleans chapter President Kim Windon oversaw the distribution of the funds to members in need. "IABC is all about our community, our network and our colleagues, and the immediate and immense response to our call for donations to the Relief Fund just proves that our network is successful and active," says Owens. "I'm proud to have had a small hand in helping out our friends and colleagues in New Orleans."
