I-DATA PRINTING SYSTEM ENTERS LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH IBM.


i-data Printing Systems, an i-data international business unit, has entered into a licensing agreement with IBM Corp. The agreement allows IBM to include i-data Printing Systems transform software into IBM's OS/390 (mainframe) Flagship Software, Infoprint Server for OS/390.

Under this agreement, IBM will license I-data print transform software, including Advanced Function Presentation (printer, language) Advanced Function Presentation - (AFP) A page description language from IBM introduced in 1984 initially as Advanced Function Printing. AFP was first developed for mainframes and then brought to minicomputers and workstations.  (AFP (1) (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) The file sharing protocol used in an AppleTalk network. In order for non-Apple networks to access data in an AppleShare server, their protocols must translate into the AFP language. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. PCL Level 5, introduced with the LaserJet III in 1990, also supports Compugraphic's Intellifont scalable fonts. ), Postscript and Adobe Acrobat PDF formats. Effectively, this enables IBM's Infoprint Server to distribute AFP documents to a wide range of PCL and Postscript workgroup printers or as PDF files, which is the de-facto document format on the Internet.
