I'd like to get a laser pen for school. Are they dangerous?

Dear Jeff:

Laser pens are designed to be used by adults as "pointers" for projection screens. But some elementary school-age children are buying laser pens and using them as toys.

Laser pens carry the warning: "Danger -- Laser Light. Avoid Direct Eye Exposure." We contacted Jerome Dennis of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health. he said, "Laser pointer pens are certified, which is to say they meet our safety standards, but they are not toys. They serve a useful purpose, but they are not for kids. We don't allow children to play with matches or power tools. They shouldn't play with laser pens, either."
