This fictional autobiographical account of the famous Dred Scott brings him to life with compassion and the intimate sort of detail that the listener will not soon forget. The text version in dialect form may be a little difficult for young people to read, but reader Fernandez takes care of that difficulty with ease and grace. His strong voice and deliberate cadence do justice to the compelling tale of Scott's life as a slave with an assortment of masters, good and bad.

Never knowing his parents or whether he has siblings, moved around the country or left behind to hire out, Scott manages to fall in love, marry, and father two daughters. Landing finally in Missouri, it is explained to him that he should be considered free because of the Missouri Compromise Missouri Compromise, 1820–21, measures passed by the U.S. Congress to end the first of a series of crises concerning the extension of slavery. . He and his wife take up the legal battle with famous results.
