These kits detect the presence of antibodies associated with anti-phospholipid syndrome (ACA), pernicious anemia (GPC) and Goodpasture's syndrome (GBM). While the relative incidences of these diseases are low, like other autoimmune disorders, they tend to increase as the population ages.

Anti-phospholipid antibodies have been reported in up to 2% of the normal population. Occasionally, they are associated with various infections and the ingestion ingestion /in·ges·tion/ (-chun) the taking of food, drugs, etc., into the body by mouth.

Roughly, one in 1,000 people have pernicious anemia in which the lining of the stomach can no longer adequately absorb vitamin B12. Pernicious anemia is the end result of atrophic gastritis, which affects up to 30% of 60 year olds and up to 50% of 70 year olds and is associated with other autoimmune endocrine disorders.

Goodpasture's syndrome is rare, affecting about 1 in 100,000 people, usually men aged 16 to 61 years. The kidney is the organ affected in this disorder, which is characterized by excretion of protein and blood in the urine that progresses rapidly to kidney failure.
