Hybrid Laminated Fiber Sheets: No. 7,288,307; Ashok Bhatnagar, Lori Wagner and Harold Murray, assigned to Honeywell International Inc., Morristown, NJ.

Hybrid Laminated Fiber Sheets: No. 7,288,307; Ashok Bhatnagar, Lori Wagner and Harold Murray, assigned to Honeywell International Inc., Morristown, NJ. Filed 1/12/04. Issued 10/30/07.

A ballistic laminate was patented. It comprises a first nonwoven layer with two or more types of unidirectional fibers of different composition in a matrix. The fibers extending in a first fiber direction are arranged in a side-by-side relationship and extend in a second direction that is transverse to the first fiber direction. The fibers of the first layer are selected from the group consisting of high molecular weight polyethylene, aramid, PBO, PBT, polyamide, polyester and ceramic fibers, the fibers of different composition extend in an essentially periodic array in the second direction. The periodic distance between fibers of the same composition are from about the diameter of a single fiber to not greater than about nine millimeters.

A second nonwoven layer comprises a plurality of two or more types of unidirectional fibers of different composition in a matrix. The fibers of the second layer extend in a second fiber direction. The fibers of the second layer are arranged in a side-by-side relationship that extends in a second direction that is transverse to the second fiber direction. The fibers of the second layer are selected from the group consisting of high molecular weight polyethylene, aramid, PBO, PBT, polyamide, polyester and ceramic fibers. The fibers of different composition extend in an essentially -periodic array in the second direction. The periodic distance between fibers of the same composition are from about the diameter of a single fiber to not greater than about nine millimeters. The second fiber direction is at an angle relative to the first fiber direction. The first and second layers are bonded together in a stacked array.
