Hurricane Rita joins Katrina to whip up prices even more.More resin price hikes are under way as the impact of Hurricane Rita Hurricane Rita was the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the most intense tropical cyclone ever observed in the Gulf of Mexico. Rita caused $11.3 billion in damage on the U.S. Gulf Coast in September 2005. adds to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina propylene glycol a colorless viscous liquid used as a humectant and solvent in pharmaceutical preparations. , and ethylene glycol ethylene glycol: see glycol. ethylene glycol Simplest member of the glycol family, also called 1,2-ethanediol (HOCH2CH2OH). By mid-October, natural gas prices were up 116% since early 2005, while crude oil prices rose to $62/barrel. Disruptions in transportation and higher energy prices have also brought rail and trucking surcharges. The result has been rapid-fire price increases--as many as twice in the same month--on all volume resins as well as engineering thermoplastics, thermosets thermosets, materials that can not be softened on heating. In thermosetting polymers, the polymer chains are joined (or cross-linked) by intermolecular bonding. Thermosets are usually supplied as partially polymerized or as monomer-polymer mixtures. , and polyurethanes polyurethanes (pŏl'ēy r`əthānz), group of plastics that may be either thermosetting or thermoplastic. Polyurethane can be made into both flexible and rigid foams. . So-called
"temporary" surcharges--to remain until further notice--are
spreading to more and more resins.PE supplies tight Polyethylene polyethylene (pŏl'ēĕth`əlēn), widely used plastic. It is a polymer of ethylene, CH2=CH2, having the formula (-CH2-CH2-)n prices, which moved up a total of 19 cents/lb in August and September, were headed up another 5 cents as suppliers implemented increases on Oct. 1 or 15. A new hike of 8 cents/lb, effective Nov. 1, was announced in mid-October. Contributing factors: Hurricane Rita compounded the effects of Hurricane Katrina on ethylene monomer monomer (mŏn`əmər): see polymer. monomer Molecule of any of a class of mostly organic compounds that can react with other molecules of the same or other compounds to form very large molecules (polymers). supplies, which were already tight before the storms. Making matters worse was the Oct. 6 explosion at a Formosa Plastics Formosa Plastics Corporation (Traditional Chinese: 台灣塑膠公司; lit. Ethylene monomer contract prices, which stood at 36 cents/lb in July, settled at 45 cents to 46 cents in September. Proposed October contracts were for 55 cents to 56 cents/lb. Says one major PE supplier, "Spot ethylene is nearly impossible to get, even at recent prices as high as 60 cents to 67 cents/lb. Moreover, prices for comonomers--hexene, octene, and butene--are up 30% to 40%, which means that they now add more than 2 cents/lb to the cost of making LLDPE LLDPE Linear Low Density Polyethylene ." This caused some resin suppliers to declare force majeure [French, A superior or irresistible power.] An event that is a result of the elements of nature, as opposed to one caused by human behavior. PP is tight and costly Polypropylene polypropylene (pŏl'ēprō`pəlēn), plastic noted for its light weight, being less dense than water; it is a polymer of propylene. It resists moisture, oils, and solvents. prices were expected to move up by as much as 12 cents/lb last month, as suppliers aimed to implement two successive 6 cents increases--or one larger one--in early and mid-October. A 7 cents increase for Nov. 1 was also issued by most major suppliers. Some, like Dow, tacked on an additional 2 cents/lb for impact copolymers. Contributing factors: The two hurricanes compounded an already tight resin situation, causing several plants to shut down temporarily, affecting about one-third of U.S. PP production and resulting in allocation programs by several suppliers. Basell's Lake Charles Lake Charles, city (1990 pop. 70,580), seat of Calcasieu parish, SW La.; inc. 1867. It is located on Lake Charles at the mouth of the Calcasieu River in a rice, timber, oil, and natural gas region. , La., plant alone, which accounts for one-fourth of U.S. production (800 million lb/yr), is expected to reopen early this month. While resin demand continues to be strong, tight resin and feedstock feed·stock n. Raw material required for an industrial process. Noun 1. feedstock - the raw material that is required for some industrial process raw material, staple - material suitable for manufacture or use or finishing supplies are expected to continue through the end of the year. Propylene monomer contract prices, which had risen a total of 8 cents/lb in August and September, were expected to shoot up by another 10 cents to 12 cents in October. PVC on allocation PVC prices rose 12 cents/lb in October. OxyChem led with a 15 cents increase, but Formosa followed with 13 cents and Shintech and Georgia Gulf announced 12 cents. Westlake announced a 15 cents hike but applied an immediate TVA TVA: see Tennessee Valley Authority. to 3 cents of that amount. Producers told the market to expect more hikes ahead. PVC compounders also announced price increases of 15 cents/lb for a range of dates in October and November. Contributing factors: Resin producers' rule of thumb is that a $1 increase in natural gas prices adds 2 cents to the cost of PVC. Before Katrina, natural gas was at $6/million Btu; by mid October it was $14, indicating that more PVC hikes lie ahead if gas stays high. Hurricane Rita did more physical damage to the chemical industry than Katrina, disrupting transportation and causing a week-long shutdown shut·down n. A cessation of operations or activity, as at a factory. shutdown Noun the closing of a factory, shop, or other business Verb shut down and restart To resume computer operation after a planned or unplanned termination. See boot, warm boot and checkpoint/restart. of ethylene monomer and natural-gas operations along the Gulf Coast. Spot ethylene in mid-October was in the 65 cents to 70 cents range, just as the year-end rush of orders was arriving for pipe, windows, and siding to complete outdoor construction jobs. Then an explosion and fire in an ethylene cracker at Formosa's Point Comfort, Texas, plant on Oct. 6 tightened ethylene supplies even further for the foreseeable future. Until that point, Formosa was the only PVC producer that hadn't declared force majeure. Now Formosa's allocation level is 63% and OxyChem's is 90%. Shintech is at 100%. Important additives like wax lubricants lubricants preparations for the lubrication of passages to reduce frictional injury, e.g. oily preparations, including petroleum jelly, lanolin or water-soluble preparations such as methyl cellulose. and TiO2 are also in short supply. PS up 10 cents, more to come Polystyrene polystyrene (pŏl'ēstī`rēn), widely used plastic; it is a polymer of styrene. Polystyrene is a colorless, transparent thermoplastic that softens slightly above 100°C; (212°F;) and becomes a viscous liquid at around 185°C; went up a nickel in September and again in October, and resin producers announced another 6 cents hike for Nov. 1. Dow, Nova, and Chevron stacked another 5 cents on top of that for Nov. 15. Contributing factors: Most PS resin producers are on force mojezzre status because of shortages of natural gas and styrene sty·rene n. A colorless oily liquid from which polystyrenes, plastics, and synthetic rubber are produced. Also called vinylbenzene. monomer. Dow is on 50% allocation, Total at 75%, Nova at 80%. Ineos and Chevron have implemented "sales control" but so far have not gone to force majeure. Two Gulf Coast suppliers of butadiene butadiene (by t'ədī`ēn), colorless, gaseous hydrocarbon. Suppliers also applied "temporary surcharges" of 8 cents to 16 cents/lb in October. At press time, it appeared that these would not be lifted entirely in November, although a reduction was probable, according to one supplier. Contributing factors: Continued hikes in PET tabs are linked directly to shortages of feedstocks--paraxylene and ethylene glycol--and to sharp price increases in those chemicals. PET producers have been forced to curtail cur·tail tr.v. cur·tailed, cur·tail·ing, cur·tails To cut short or reduce. See Synonyms at shorten. [Middle English curtailen, to restrict resin production, and several have instituted allocation programs. Says one major player, "The shortages of paraxylene are expected to be eased by large imports due this month. However, availability of ethylene glycol, which is linked to ethylene supply shortages, will continue to be a problem. Engineering resins up Nylons went up across the board in October.
