Hungarian ghost.

Erick van Egeraat's addition to an Italianate bank in Budapest is a radical mixture of technology and history.

In common with other central European cities, Budapest faces the task of coming to terms with a legacy of old buildings in a way that does not diminish history, yet also suggests a willingness to embrace innovation. One of the most inventive recent examples of this difficult balancing act was Erick van Egeraat's audacious remodelling of an eclectic nineteenth-century Austro-Hungarian palazzo for the ING and NNH NNH Number Needed to Harm (medical)

Bank. The first phase of the project (AR July 1995) concentrated on refurbishing the existing building, restoring it to its former period splendour and enclosing a central courtyard. This phase also added a two-storey extension to house a new boardroom and bring light down deep into the building. Combining organic morphology with nautical materiality, a bulging form erupts out of the roof with the seductive delight of a conjurer's trick.

The second phase of the renovation is now complete and consists of a new 5000 sq m extension to the original building. The new structure makes no attempt to emulate its monumental, Italianate neighbour. Instead it takes the form of a seven-storey glass box that docks on to the refurbished bank, filling a corner site and completing the urban block. While matching the bank palazzo in scale, the lightness and transparency of the new intervention establish a conspicuous contrast with the ornate, wedding cake solidity so·lid·i·ty

pattern. From a distance the pattern imitates the appearance of natural stone; at close range it dissolves to a dotted translucent screen that admits light into the deep plan. The double-glazed walls also incorporate a return air system, part of an environmental control strategy that includes chilled beams to provide necessary cooling.

Freed from the constraints of the original nineteenth-century building, internal organization in the new wing is an elementary exercise in maximizing operable operable /op·er·a·ble/ (op´er-ah-b'l) subject to being operated upon with a reasonable degree of safety; appropriate for surgical removal.

floor area. Each floor of the old bank connects through with new tracts of office space. A strip of services is set on the edge of the blind party wall. Along Paulay street, individual offices are separated from the main open plan areas by a series of rotating glass walls.

A crisply detailed staircase suspended by steel cables, and a pair of glass lifts bring a touch of theatre to an otherwise slightly formulaic interior realm. But it is the glass walls that excite most attention, giving the building an intriguing, wraith-like presence in the gloomy Budapest streets.

The ingenious glazed skin also represents the development of van Egeraat's interest in glass and climate control that builds on projects such as the School of Fashion and Graphic Design in Utrecht (AR May 1998). Here, his synthesis of technology and history continues that radical exploration.
