said "Back on Track" is a good alternative for companies that want to help their laid off employees but can't afford a "human" human resources presentation.

package (with the client company's logo on the front), sells for $175, with a lower per-unit cost if a bigger quantity is purchased. Leighton said live presentations often cost more than $1,000 per day and result in less retention of information by the employees.

Leighton said some type of assistance for employees who are let go is essential because layoffs can lead to anger, lawsuits, threats of violence and even suicides.

"People are angry when they get laid off, and many companies are doing nothing," said Leighton. "A lot of our reaction has to do with the way things are presented. You're not going to coldly hand them the tape package and say. |Here.'. . . . I think it's very, very important for companies to go out of their way to help people when they're downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs.

With the unemployment picture looking bleaker than it has in a long time, and the economy still in recession, the timing couldn't be better for "Back on Track." After only about eight weeks on the market, Criterion had sold packages to 15 companies, said Leighton.

"We geared the tapes toward times like this," she said. "We expect to do extremely well."

"Back on Track" is "the first of many" tape packages to come from Criterion, she promised.

Before entering the business world, Leighton taught workshops for the state Board of Education and private communications classes for four years. In 1978, she founded Leighton Corp., a recruiting firm, which she sold in 1982 to form the Legal Talent Directory. Two years later, she founded Criterion.
