Hughes wins contract with People's Republic of China.

VIENNA, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 1997--Hughes STX Corp., an operating unit of Hughes Technical Services Co., has been awarded a contract to develop a satellite ground processing system for the China Center for Resources Satellite Data and Applications (CRESDA).

The contract is estimated at approximately $10 million.

The system will process data for the China Brazil Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS), which is being jointly developed by China and Brazil to provide remote sensing data for environmental monitoring.

Hughes STX, located in Lanham, Md., will design and develop a fully integrated CBERS Data Processing System (CDPS), which will be installed in CRESDA's facility in Beijing, China.

``This award is indicative of our expertise in remote sensing processing systems,'' said Hughes STX President Ashok Kaveeshwar.

``It solidifies our position as a provider of next-generation technology to the international remote sensing ground station community. We are extremely excited with this opportunity to bring Hughes resources and expertise to ensure the success of this program.''

Hughes STX faced international competition from France and Canada, but Kaveeshwar attributes the contract award to Hughes' ``past performance and technical expertise in archive-data management and data distribution for the U.S. Geological Survey's Earth Resources Observation System Data Center, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) and the Department of Commerce's Landsat program.''

Kaveeshwar added, ``For the past 15 years, Hughes STX has had an excellent working relationship with the People's Republic of China in the area of remote sensing.''
