Tactical ballistic missiles are usually mobile to ensure survivability and quick deployment, as well as carrying a variety of warheads to target enemy  early warning and surveillance system.

The fiscal year 1995 portion of the award is $23 million.

The Hughes/TRW team was one of two contractor teams selected to perform trade studies, architecture definition and technology demonstrations under a 15-month pre-engineering manufacturing and development (pre-EMD) contract. An operational SBIRS system will consist of satellites in geosynchronous, highly elliptical el·lip·tic   or el·lip·ti·cal

The Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center Based out of Los Angeles Air Force Base in California, the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) is a part of Air Force Space Command of the United States Air Force. Its mission is to conduct research and development of U.S. military outer space and missile systems.  has indicated it plans to choose one contractor team in late 1996 to proceed with the engineering, manufacturing and development of SBIRS. This multiple-year contract will result in delivery of five geosynchronous satellites, infrared sensors and SBIRS consolidated ground elements.

"We look forward to working with the Air Force on this contract," said HSC President Donald L. Cromer. "It's a complex task, and we believe we have combined the best resources of our companies to provide efficient satellite manufacturing, reliable sensors and ground support."

"We have an experienced, integrated product team working closely to produce a system that meets the government's requirements with low cost and schedule risk," said Tim Hannemann, executive vice president and general manager of TRW Space & Electronics Group.
