Hughes Aircraft gets missile contracts totaling $280 million.


Hughes Aircraft Hughes Aircraft Company was a major aerospace and defense company founded by Howard Hughes. The group was based near Ballona Creek, in Culver City, California, USA, on the Pacific Coast.

Hughes Aircraft was acquired by General Motors in 1985.

Rocket-propelled weapon designed to deliver an explosive warhead with great accuracy at high speed. Missiles vary from small tactical weapons effective out to only a few hundred feet to much larger strategic weapons with ranges of several thousand miles.

Los Angeles-based Hughes Aircraft Co.'s missile systems group was awarded contracts totaling $280 million for two production programs at its facility in Tucson Tucson (t`sŏn'), city (1990 pop. 405,390), seat of Pima co., SE Ariz.; inc. 1877. .

The Air Force released $229 million to Hughes for continued production of 450 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles Noun 1. air-to-air missile - a missile designed to be launched from one airplane at another
missile - a rocket carrying a warhead of conventional or nuclear explosives; may be ballistic or directed by remote control
. Delivery of the missiles is expected to be completed by March 1993.

In addition, the Army awarded Hughes a $50 million contract for 4,500 TOW anit-armor missiles that are also to be delivered by March 1993.
