Hughes' Former CEO Mike Smith Joins NeTune Board.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 2001

Michael T. Smith, former Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Hughes Electronics Corporation, has been elected to the board of directors of NeTune Communications, Inc., it was announced today by NeTune CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Curtis Clark.

NeTune Communications, Inc. is a provider of a comprehensive range of digital satellite and terrestrial wireless communication services for the motion picture and television production industries.

Prior to retiring from Hughes in May 2001, Smith also served as Chairman of DIRECTV Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies.  and PanAmSat, as well as Chairman of Hughes Aircraft Hughes Aircraft Company was a major aerospace and defense company founded by Howard Hughes. The group was based near Ballona Creek, in Culver City, California, USA, on the Pacific Coast.

Hughes Aircraft was acquired by General Motors in 1985.

Smith joined Hughes Electronics in 1985, the year the company was formed, as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer after spending nearly 20 years with General Motors in a variety of financial management positions. Hughes Electronics was formed after General Motors acquired Hughes Aircraft Company. In 1992, he was elected Vice Chairman of Hughes Electronics and Chairman of Hughes Missile Systems Company, a subsidiary composed of the former General Dynamics missile operations, acquired by Hughes in 1992, and the former Hughes Missile Systems Group. In 1995, he was elected Chairman of Hughes Aircraft Company.

It was founded in 1997 through a startup grant of $50 million from the W. M. Keck Foundation.
