"He was a very caring person," said Peter Swords, a former executive director of NPCC who worked with Dressner for more than 20 years. "He was somebody who was extremely pleasant to work with. When you had a meeting that Howard was going to be at you would perk up perk 1

Dressner died in late December, 2002 at the age of 83.

During his lengthy career in the nonprofit sector, Dressner was founding president of NPCC in 1984 and remained president until 1991. The NPCC has more than 1,100 members in the New York City New York City: see New York, city.

The organization started with a budget of less than $100,000, Swords said. It now has a budget of roughly $650,000.

Swords remembered Dressner's untiring effort to recruit new members and urging others to do the same when the organization began. "The NPCC never would have happened without his vision," Swords said.

"He had a vision of nonprofits being an important part of the New York society," said Howard Mantel, an NPCC board member who knew Dressner for many years. "He had a marvelous ability to talk with people and, in this case, get them to understand what nonprofits were about. His greatest asset was his ability to communicate with people."

Dressner started at the Ford Foundation in 1964, was appointed general counsel in 1971, and retired from the foundation in 1984.

Early in his career Dressner taught at New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. Dressner's legacy continues at NPCC. "We all loved him," Swords said. "He was like a founding father. NPCC was a family, and we all came up together. It's hard to believe that he won't be around anymore."
