How to design and build your own house.

How To Design and Build Your Own House, by Lupe DiDonno and Phyllis Sperling (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1984; $11.95). This 365-page work, with more than 600 line drawings, covers each phase of new-house building, from design to finish work. It also includes tables and charts for selecting lumber grades, calculating heat-loss factors, figuring roof pitches and loads, and other important details.

Sprinkled through the 29 chapters are close-up looks at basic subjects, such as lumber categories, selecting water heaters, proper roof flashing, and how to install a lockset. An illustrated glossary of tools and a bibliography for further reading complete the book.
