How to Treat Scabies

Diagnosis is most commonly made by looking at the burrows or rash. A skin scraping may be taken to look for mites, eggs, or mite fecal matter (scybala) to confirm the diagnosis. Even if a skin scraping or biopsy is taken and returns negative, it is still possible that you may be infested. Typically, there are fewer than 10 mites on the entire body of an infested person; this makes it easy for an infestation to be missed. However, persons with Norwegian, or crusted, scabies can be infested with thousands of mites and should be considered highly infectious.

However, persons with Norwegian, or crusted, scabies can be infested with thousands of mites and should be considered highly infectious.

Most cases of scabies are completely eradicated with a single overnight application of 5% permethrin cream (Elimite cream), available by prescription. It is the preferred agent to treat scabies all the way down to 2 months of age (more than 30% of scabies are now resistant to Eurax lotion, an earlier treatment). Elimite should be massaged into the skin from the scalp all the way to the soles of the feet. It should be thoroughly rinsed off 8-14 hours later. All family members, baby-sitters, and close physical contacts should be treated. Usually a 2-oz tube will treat one adult. Lindane is an effective alternative treatment, but I don''t recommend its use. It works and it is cheaper, but it is also far more toxic. In pregnant women and infants under 2 months, a smelly sulfur ointment is often used nightly for 3 to 5 days.

Put non-machine-washable quilts and blankets inside a large trash bag and seal it tightly. Leave it sealed for two weeks. The scabies mites will die without a human host.

Treat the body with an insecticide lotion. They are available over the counter or by prescription. Cover the entire body with lotion, from neck to toes. Leave it on for several hours before showering.

A person with scabies is considered infectious as long as they have not been treated. Infested pieces of clothing and bedding are considered infectious until treated. After treatment, a person may unknowingly re-infest themselves by coming into contact with the same person who had scabies to begin with or with someone else who has scabies.

Lice are wingless insects that feed on human blood. Three types move onto the scalp, the body, or the pubic area. Lice are most often from august through November, and they are easily spread through skin-to-skin contactor by sharing clothes, combs and bedding. Crab lice the kind that infests your pubic area is often spread by sex but you can also get them from a toilet seat.

Extract the juice from 400 - 500 gm of drumstick leaves. Mix with an equal amount of sesame seed oil, and boil till the water dries up. Cool and store. Apply daily over the infected parts. Both have strong anti-microbial properties.

Everyone living with the infected person, as well as intimate contacts, needs to be treated. Everyone should be treated at the same time to prevent re-infestation with scabies from other persons who might be infected but do not show any symptoms yet.
Also, the infected persons clothing and bedding needs to be washed in hot water and ironed so as to kill the mites and all of its eggs.
