How to Build A Greener City.


Some 800 people came to Seattle for AMERICAN FORESTS' 1999 National Urban Forest Conference, August 31-September 3. There AMERICAN FORESTS American Forests is a nonprofit conservation organization that promotes healthy forests and urban tree planting.

The organization was established in 1875 as the American Forestry Association, by physician/horticulturist John Aston Warder and a group of like-minded citizens
 unveiled its 5-step plan to fight sprawl with tree-smart development and released its Regional Ecosystem Analysis showing a whopping 92 percent of Seattle as sparsely forested.

In his keynote speech. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman announced USDA USDA,

 will plant 100 of AMERICAN FORESTS' Famous & Historic Trees in each state capital and Washington, DC, to create Millennium Groves that "reflect the unique character" of each state.

King County Executive Ron Sims announced a partnership with AMERICAN FORESTS, Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, and others to plant 200,000 trees in 2000 along the I-90 corridor.

The Global ReLeaf hanquet capped the conference with awards for environmental excellence and achievement presented to Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, Garden.com, Eddie Bauer, and American Express, among others.
