How the rest of us feel. The October 2006 Viewpoint by Gary Christenot ("Why I'm Against Pre-Game Prayers") is a typical example--from my experience--of Christian arrogance and ignorance. Many Christians automatically assume that everybody is Christian and are then shocked to learn otherwise. All I could do was nod my head, thinking, "Now you know how the rest of us feel." I would be interested to know what justification Mr. Christenot has for his incredible statement that "the majority culture [in Hawaii] proved hostile to [his Christian] faith and beliefs." His article makes no mention of any hostility shown by the Buddhists. Is he just imagining it? Over-dramatizing? Or projecting his own attitude onto others? I've lived in Hawaii for over eight years, three of them in the same Wahiawa Wahiawa (wä'hēəwä`), residential city (1990 pop. 17,386), Honolulu co., Hawaii, on central Oahu, in an area that produces pineapple. It is a commercial and trucking center for the pineapple industry. The U.S. army's Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Air Force Base adjoin the city and contribute to the economy. area where Mr. Christenot lived, and I have encountered many different religious beliefs. In my experience, the Buddhists are the absolute nicest and most tolerant while it is the Christians who are the most hostile and intolerant. Brian Christensen Lihue, Hawaii |
