Housing starts in Thunder Bay down a quarter.


Statistics from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC CMHC community mental health center. ) revealed total starts for Thunder Bay Thunder Bay, city (1991 pop. 113,946), SW Ont., Canada, on Thunder Bay inlet of Lake Superior. The city was created in 1970 by the amalgamation of the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur and two adjoining townships.  dropped by 25.7 per cent in 2005.

The total of 179-single detached units and 48 multi-family unit starts in 2005 is down from the 241 single detached units and 46 multifamily starts for 2004. Specifically the McIntyre Ward accumulated 52 housing starts followed by Red River ward with 43 and Neebing with 42. Outside Thunder Bay, the starts fell to 29 units, down from 50 last year.

"Demand for new single-detached homes that existed earlier this decade has now subsided," says Warren Philp, Northern Ontario Northern Ontario is the part of the province of Ontario which lies north of Lake Huron (including Georgian Bay), the French River and Lake Nipissing.
