The buildings near Hedrick and Rieber Halls could house as many as 2,000 students, with the first scheduled for completion by fall 2004 and the other two a year later. With two-bedroom apartments renting in the $2,000 to $2,400 a month range in the North Village area, many students appear to be opting for less expensive alternatives further from campus.

Taylor said she has seen "a couple dozen" for rent signs in the area. "You rarely saw a 'For Rent' sign after school started," said Taylor. "(The dormitories) have to be a concern for property owners."

The school is nearing its obligations under the state mandate, according to Michael Foraker, director of housing.

"We are closing in on 100 percent drawing and specifications for (the 750-bed) Hedrick Hall North," he said. "Drawings and specifications for the other two facilities will be finished in the next four or five months."
