Housing consultant leaves redevelopment agency, accepts housing post at TELACU

Getting named top housing honcho Honcho

It has a large Mexican-American population. There is a performing arts center and a cultural center. A junior college is there.  Community Union (TELACU) is Sharon Payt, 35, formerly a housing consultant to the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Community Redevelopment Agency. Taking the title of vice president of TELACU Affordable Housing Inc., Payt vows to build affordable and market-rate housing in Los Angeles.

"I have long wanted to be in housing development," said Payt. "This is the perfect opportunity to do it. No place needs affordable housing more."

TELACU, based in East Los Angeles, has two apartments with 150 units for senior citizens already built, and five low-income or senior apartment projects underway, with a total of 340 units, said Payt.

A Hollywood resident, Payt will also be looking to build market-rate housing and single-family housing. "We are buying up scattered sites throughout Los Angeles," she said. "We are in-filling, rather than building farther and farther out farther out

TELACU, which has more than 500 employees, also operates a 56-acre industrial park, an 18-van transportation system for the elderly and disabled, the Community Thrift & Loan (a thrift), and Tamayo, a restaurant in East Los Angeles.

The organization is headed by David Lizarraga, president.
