House approves 'faith-based' bias in head start program.The U.S. House of Representatives has voted narrowly to allow religious discrimination in hiring for Head Start centers run by religious groups. By a 220-196 tally that fell largely along partisan lines, the House on Sept. 22 adopted an amendment offered by Reps. John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Charles Boustany Charles William Boustany Jr. (born February 21, 1956) represents Louisiana's historically Democratic 7th congressional district as a Republican since 2004. Boustany (pronounced boo-STAN-ie) won an open race in 2004, when Christopher "Chris" John, the incumbent Democrat, did (R-La.) to exempt religious organizations from the ban on employment bias on grounds of religion. Americans United for Separation of Church and State Americans United for Separation of Church and State (Americans United or AU for short) is a religious freedom advocacy group in the United States which promotes the separation of church and state, a legal doctrine seen by the AU as being enshrined in the Establishment , working in a coalition of civil liberties, education and other public interest groups, had urged representatives to defeat the amendment of the Head Start re-authorization bill allowing for the employment discrimination provision. Lynn (born 1948 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) has been the Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State since 1992.[1] called the House vote "shameful shame·ful adj. 1. a. Lynn added, however, that he is confident the discriminatory provision will not become law. He noted that the House vote was close and that "momentum is clearly building against taxpayer-funded job bias."
