Host city participation paramount to success.


We are always trying to find ways to improve the Northern Ontario Business Northern Ontario Business is a Canadian magazine, which publishes monthly in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. The magazine covers business news and issues in Northern Ontario.  Awards program and to generate more profile for our entrepreneurs whose successes in the region are important to all of us.

The participation of host communities, in particular, is paramount to the success of the Awards Gala.

NOBA 2002 was the first year in our 16-year history that delegates were "piped" into the Gala dining room by the host hotel manager (Tom Mason, Clarion Resort Pinewood pine·wood

 Park). It was one of those warm NOBA moments that we will continue to talk about for many years to come.

Of course, over the years there have also been some other NOBA moments that people continue to talk about that we wish never happened, but that is part of the reality of hosting such an enormous event in a different city every year.

This year, as we continued to search for ways to improve the program and to stay true to its mission, we decided to launch a new award--the Judges' Choice Award. This award will be presented annually to a nominee who has been chosen by an independent panel of judges Panel of Judges is an indie pop band from Melbourne, Australia. Members

For example, the first winner of this new award category is a company from northwestern Ontario Northwestern Ontario is the region within the Canadian province of Ontario which lies north and west of Lake Superior, and west of Hudson Bay and James Bay. Nominations for this new award must follow the same criteria as other Award categories, but in order to qualify for the Judges' Choice Award, the nominee must also be from the region of that year's NOBA host city.

The Judges' Choice Award was launched to encourage more nominations from host cities, to draw attention to the calibre of businesses in host cities and to give host cities more ownership in the NOBA program.

As well, this year NOBA launched its "Wall of Fame." This new initiative will continue to grow as NOBA makes it rounds across Northern Ontario Northern Ontario is the part of the province of Ontario which lies north of Lake Huron (including Georgian Bay), the French River and Lake Nipissing.

Northern Ontario has a land area of 802,000 km² (310,000 mi²) and constitutes 87% of the land area of Ontario, although it
 over the next five years. The Wall of Fame is a visual memento of the quantity, quality and geographic diversity of the NOBA Alumni.

This year in Thunder Bay, we highlighted the accomplishments of 35 companies from northwestern Ontario who are part of the NOBA Alumni.

Their stories brought back many memories.

Every year as we rotate to another Northern Ontario city, we will profile and highlight NOBA Alumni from that host city.

Next year we will be in Sault Ste. Marie Sault Sainte Marie — pronounced "Soo Saint Marie" (IPA /su seɪnt məˈɹi/) — is the name of two cities on the Saint Marys River, which forms part of the boundary between the United States and Canada. , and we look forward to receiving many nominations from the Sault and to creating more memories for our Wall of Fame.
