Hospitals: ranked by net patient revenue.


EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

THE Business Journal compiled two lists of hospitals--one a ranking by net patient revenues for the 2006 calendar year and the other ranking the hospitals by the average number of staffed beds for the fourth quarter of 2006.

Overall. hospitals in L.A. County reported $14.5 billion in net patient revenues according to according to
prep.
1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians.

2. In keeping with: according to instructions.

 data provided by the Office of Statewide Health and Planning, the state agency that oversees hospitals. The 25 largest hospitals locally account for $9.3 billion, or 64 percent, of the net revenues.

There was an average of 19,901 staffed beds in L.A. County last year with an occupancy rate Noun 1. occupancy rate - the percentage of all rental units (as in hotels) are occupied or rented at a given time
pct, per centum, percent, percentage - a proportion in relation to a whole (which is usually the amount per hundred)
 of 77.1 percent. There were just over 7.4 million adjusted patient days for local hospitals in 2006.

Local hospitals were licensed for 26,195 beds. L.A. County+USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  Medical Center is licensed for 1,395 beds, the most in the county, but only had 625 beds staffed during the fourth quarter of 2006. The hospital has a 600-bed facility under construction, accounting for most of the difference.

 facilities are not included on the list of facilities ranked by revenues because of the non-profit's structure. Kaiser members belong to its HMO HMO health maintenance organization.

CEDARS-SINAI MEDICAL CENTER Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a world-renowned hospital located in Los Angeles, California. History
Cedars-Sinai is the result of a merger in 1961 between two major Los Angeles hospitals, Cedars of Lebanon and Mount Sinai Home for the Incurables, with Steve Broidy as
 

WITH 949 staffed beds and net patient revenues of $1.4 billion in 2006, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center tops both lists of hospitals. The Los Angeles-based facility saw revenues increase by $85 million, or 6.5 percent compared with the like period a year earlier.

Last year, the hospital opened its 150-bed Saperstein Critical Care Tower. The tower was constructed at a cost of $110 million and serves largely as a replacement of its adult intensive care unit. The extra beds have helped the hospital deal with the demand placed on emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  providers that are severely strained because of the high volume of activity locally.

Note: Bed information and occupancy rate was obtained from the Office
of Statewide Health Planning and Development (O.S.H.P.D.) Quarterly
Financial Reports. Data on this list is from the four quarters ended
Dec. 31, 2006. Operating margin is defined as net operating revenue
divided by net operating income. Other information was provided by the
hospitals themselves. Only general acute care facilities were included.
Hospitals are ranked by revenues for the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2006.
