City (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S.
, from its formation through to the present. Their cases are not solved as quickly, sometimes never; the equipment, settings, and personnel are not nearly as glamorous; but the author obviously got to know many of the detectives and does a great job describing their work. The listener can easily understand why some cases stay with some detectives for years--until they are solved or until the detectives retire (and even then they are not totally forgotten).

Foss's narration is insightful, capably expressing the emotions of the stories and the people involved. She creates slightly voiced characterizations for the speakers, and she is especially skillful skill·ful

 when narrating the feelings of the family members. Her pitch and tone are appropriately varied, and never fail to convey her interest and insight into the story.
