Honour for Archbishop. (Angola).


In Angola, Archbishop Zacarias Kamuenho of Lubango was honoured by the Committee of Presidents of the European Parliament European Parliament, a branch of the governing body of the European Union (EU). It convenes on a monthly basis in Strasbourg, France; most meetings of the separate parliamentary committees are held in Brussels, Belgium, and its Secretariat is located in Luxembourg.  who awarded him the Sakharov Prize The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named after Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, was established in December 1988 by the European Parliament as a means to honour individuals or organizations who had dedicated their lives to the defence of human rights and . The honour Honour or honor (see spelling differences), is the evaluation of a person’s trustworthiness and social status based on that individual's espousals and actions.  was bestowed in December 2001 for his work in helping to promote peace, democracy, and respect for human rights in his war-torn country. More than half a million people are believed to have been killed in the course of the conflict.

Other members of the Angolan Catholic hierarchy have also stepped up efforts for the restoration of a civil society following the death of rebel leader Jonas Savimbi Jonas Malheiro Savimbi (August 3, 1934–February 22, 2002) led UNITA, an anti-Communist rebel group that fought against the MPLA in the Angolan Civil War until his assassination in 2002.  in February 2002.
