Congratulations to Andrew Chirls on his appointment as chancellor of Philadelphia's bar association [Transitions, February February: see month.  1]. While I don't want to take away from this accomplishment, it is important to note that Todd Todd , Sir Alexander Robertus 1907-1997.

British chemist. He won a 1957 Nobel Prize for his study of nucleic acids and nucleotide structures.
 F. Stevens was president of the San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  County Bar Association during 1999. He's been openly gay throughout his legal career, and, since San Diego is our nation's seventh-largest city, he appears to be the first openly gay head of a major city bar organization.

I read with regret in the Transitions section that Joseph Hansen Joseph Hansen may refer to:
  • Joseph Hansen (socialist), an American Socialist leader.
  • Joseph Hansen (writer), a mystery writer.
  • Joseph Hansen (rower), an American rower and 2004 Olympic gold medalist.
 had died. I appreciated his warm portrayal of a professional, albeit fictional, man in a vital relationship with another man throughout the Dave Brandstetter mystery series. Those books gave me the first insights into how the everyday existence of two life partners can survive prejudice, tragedy, and even disagreements to retain the love and trust needed to stay committed.

James E. Hartfield, Largo Largo, town (1990 pop. 65,674), Pinellas co., W Fla., on the Pinellas peninsula and the Gulf Coast, across the bay from Tampa; settled 1853, inc. 1905. It is a packing, canning, and shipping center in a citrus fruit and fishing area. , Fla.
