An automatic self-verification system for passengers at inspection points has been implemented at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), as part of a package of enhanced security measures.

The new system relies on barcode imagers from UK-based data input technology company Access IS, which read both electronic boarding passes on mobile phones and conventional printed versions.

The airport chose the company's LSR110 counter-top reader, which scans and authenticates the unique barcode sent to a passenger's mobile phone, speeding up the security process. Besides providing a paperless solution, the reader is very user-friendly for passengers, which frees up airport staff to carry out other duties.

The LSR110 2D omni-directional barcode imager captures common linear, PDF417 2D stacked and Aztec 2D barcodes within seconds in any setting, including full sunlight. With a customer-facing scanner, the device has a green indicator and a sounder to confirm a "good read". At 4.7in by 2.8in by 3.5in (12cm by 7cm by 9cm), it weighs 4.23oz (120g) and operates from a 4.5V to 5V power supply.
