The system is derived from Honeywell's Primus Epic(R) integrated avionics system for new aircraft but is designed specifically for retrofitting existing aircraft. "Primus Epic CDS/R can provide existing aircraft with large, user-friendly electronic displays while saving weight, freeing up space, and increasing reliability," said John Uczekaj, Vice President and General Manager-Business, Regional and General Aviation Avionics. "It provides the growth capacity needed to take advantage of the emerging CNS/ATM CNS/ATM Communication Navigation Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management) operating environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system. ." CNS/ATM is an initiative of the International Civil Aviation Organization International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), specialized agency of the United Nations, organized in 1947, with headquarters at Montreal. The objective of the ICAO, which has 187 member nations, is to encourage the orderly growth of international civil aviation, designed to use new technology and procedures to accommodate increasing air traffic and improve safety. Aircraft that meet CNS/ATM requirements will be able to fly more-direct routes. Primus Epic CDS/R uses a cursor control device to control aircraft functions through drop-down menus on the displays. An installation can have one or two IC-1080 integrated avionics computers with optional internal flight management system (FMS FMS - Flexible Manufacturing System (factory automation). ) and global positioning system Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite. Global Positioning System (GPS) Precise satellite-based navigation and location system originally developed for U.S. military use. (GPS). The FMS/GPS utilizes Honeywell's FMZ-2000 software. The system has up to four 8- by 10-inch active matrix liquid crystal displays. "One electronic display replaces up to 10 less-reliable electro-mechanical displays, so overall reliability is hundreds of times greater," said Uczekaj. The system has received Technical Standard Order approval and its first Supplemental Type Certificate The Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) is the Federal Aviation Administration term for the approval that extends a type certificate for modifications made to an airframe, engine, or appliance.
