Honeywell/Pelorus Satellite Landing System Nears Type Acceptance and Operational Approval.

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 18, 1997--(Alberta Stock Exchange Alberta Stock Exchange

PN.) Honeywell Inc. announced at the Paris Airshow that the Honeywell/Pelorus Satellite Landing System (SLS-2000) moved toward type acceptance and operational approval from the Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  at its initial U.S. installations at Minneapolis/St. Paul and Newark, N.J. international airports. The SLS-2000 is expected to be the world's first certified system when it receives FAA Special category 1 type acceptance this summer.

The SLS-2000 was selected for installation and use by Continental Airlines at Newark International Airport in a program sponsored by the Air Transport Association. The data collected during Project Newark will be used by the FAA as the baseline for future certification processes for precision approaches benefiting other air carriers as well as general aviation.

In addition to the U.S. installations, the Honeywell/Pelorus Satellite Landing System has been purchased for installation in Australia, Brazil, Canada and Russia, with sales pending in several other countries. In Melbourne, Australia, San Jose San Jose, city, United States

"We are seeing a rapid increase in interest in Honeywell's total system solution as airport operators become familiar with our ability to apply DGPS-based technology to practical uses that will increase operating efficiency and safety at their airports," said Mike Smith, vice president and general manager for Honeywell's Business and Commuter Aviation Systems. "The SLS makes good business sense for airports as well as aircraft operators."

"GPS initiatives represent the greatest leap forward in aviation since the introduction of the jet engine," said Jeffrey Hamiel, executive director of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) in Minneapolis. "By providing precise landing guidance for all types of approaches, including circling approaches, the SLS enables aircraft to avoid long, straight-line paths to runways. This helps decrease the traffic and resulting noise in neighbourhoods in those paths."

"There is no other instrument approach aid available today that provides greater navigational flexibility and accuracy than the Satellite Landing System," said Jeff Ariens, Continental's GPS Program Director for Project Newark. "The ability to use DGPS (Differential GPS) See GPS augmentation system.  for precision approaches can improve Continental's on-time performance, enhance safety, increase savings in fuel expenses, and help reduce air traffic noise, congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

 and weather related delays."

Peter Bolton, Pelorus' vice president, marketing says "The low cost and operational advantages of the Honeywell/Pelorus SLS over existing systems paves the way to equip the 48,000 airports in the world that would benefit from the enhanced safety, reliability and efficiency of satellite based precision approach and landing capability."
