:HON) today announced that Alaska Airlines Alaska Airlines, (NYSE: ALK) is an airline based in Seattle, Washington, United States. It operates hubs at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Portland International Airport.  will be the first air transport operator to equip its fleet with Honeywell's Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS), a new safety system aimed at reducing runway incursions and other airport surface safety risks.

"Honeywell's new RAAS provides an additional safety margin to help reduce runway incursions, one of the main Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  and National Transportation Safety Board initiatives," said Kevin Finan, Alaska's Vice President for Flight Operations.

"Alaska Airlines has always been an innovator in air safety and is again making a strong safety commitment to its passengers by being the first carrier to deploy RAAS," said Brian Pulk, Vice President-General Manager, Honeywell Airlines and Airline Programs.

Alaska operates a fleet of 108 Boeing 737 and MD80 aircraft.

To enhance flight crew situational awareness Situation awareness or situational awareness [1] (SA) is the mental representation and understanding of objects, events, people, system states, interactions, environmental conditions, and other situation-specific factors affecting human performance in , RAAS uses a Global Positioning System Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite.

Precise satellite-based navigation and location system originally developed for U.S. military use.
and an internal runway database to monitor the airplane's location on or near the airport and provide aural advisories. The callouts address such things as:

--the aircraft approaching a runway in-air or on-ground,

--the aircraft aligned on a runway for take-off or taxi,

--a runway that is too short for a safe takeoff or landing,

--an inadvertent take-off attempt from a taxiway taxiway: see airport. ,

--the airplane sitting on a runway for an extended time period, and

--runway distance remaining call-outs during rejected take-off or while landing long.

RAAS is a software product currently hosted on Honeywell's Mark V and Mark VII Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems (EGPWS EGPWS Enhanced Ground-Proximity Warning System ).

An EGPWS monitors the airplane's location, providing a map-type display of the surrounding terrain and sounding an audible alert if the airplane approaches too close to terrain.

The EGPWS's main function is to reduce controlled flight into terrain Controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) describes an accident whereby an airworthy aircraft, under pilot control, inadvertently flies into terrain, an obstacle, or water. The term was developed by engineers at Boeing in the late 1970s. , when a properly functioning airplane is inadvertently flown into the ground or water, usually in poor visibility conditions.
