Honduras upholds ban on clergy officeholders.


A ban on clergy running for political offices has been upheld by the Supreme Court of Honduras Honduras (hŏndr`əs, –dyr`–; Span., ōnd .

The ban, which dates back to 1830, was overturned by the country's Supreme Electoral Court in June, prompting 14 evangelical Christian ministers to run for seats in the nation's Congress.

On July 28, the Supreme Court ruled that the Supreme Electoral Court had violated vi·o·late  
tr.v. vi·o·lat·ed, vi·o·lat·ing, vi·o·lates
1. To break or disregard (a law or promise, for example).

2. To assault (a person) sexually.
