Honda to form motorcycle manufacturing unit in India.
Honda Motor Co. said Friday it will set up a wholly owned subsidiary in India in October for the manufacture and sale of motorcycles. To be capitalized at 5 billion yen, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (Private) Ltd. will start production of 4-stroke scooters at an initial pace of 100,000 units a year, by the second half of 2001 at a new plant to be built near Delhi. Honda said it plans to raise the annual output to 200,000 units by 2004 and production of 4-stroke motorcycles is also planned in the future. Honda said it will invest 4 billion yen in the new plant. In India, Honda now manufacturers motorcycles at Hero Honda Motors Ltd., a joint venture with the Hero group, and scooters at Kinetic Motor Co. under a technical collaboration agreement.
