Hometown concert first for birthday boy Jones.

TOM JONES rolled back the years when he returned to the green, green grass of home for a one-off birthday bash.

The sex bomb wowed a 25,000-strong crowd with a gala evening in Pontypridd - his first gig in his home town since 1964.

Jones belted out the hits in his only UK appearance this year a week before celebrating his 65th birthday.

It was a remarkable night, as he sang within a few hundred yards of Laura Street in Treforest, where he grew up honing one of the most distinctive voices in showbusiness.

In a bid to give the stars of tomorrow a helping hand Jones lined up a series of support acts.

South Wales fans snapped up tickets for Ponty Park.

Kute, Max-N and DV-8 all performed in a special RedDragonFM hour of new, cutting-edge and bilingual Welsh pop, starting at 5pm.

Top Ten outfit Freefaller and a crop of new Welsh artists Tesni Jones, Along Came Man, The Story's and Amigos all preceded the evening's main event at 9pm There was a warm welcome from both the star of the night and the crowd for Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins. She appeared after Green, Green Grass of Home to serenade him with Happy Birthday and to present him with a massive cake
