An indigenous Ecuadorian marches to the Superior Court of Justice in Lago Agrio, Ecuador. In October, at the start of a landmark trial, 30,000 rainforest inhabitants sought to force U.S. oil giant ChevronTexaco to clean up the 18 billion gallons of toxic materials it dumped in the Amazon basin from 1972 to 1992. The court has the power to impose a multibillion dollar judgment against ChevronTexaco that will be enforceable in U.S. courts.
