But in the resolution passed Tuesday, Bethel School Board members underscored their continuing belief that the program benefits not just home-schooled students but also the school districts it works with. "This latest change could result in the end of HomeSource in its current successful form," the resolution reads. "It will also likely severely damage the positive connection we enjoy with home-schooled families in our district." HomeSource founder and executive officer Paula Praus-Williamson, who attended Tuesday's meeting, recently asked both the Bethel and South Lane school districts for letters of support to submit to the department. Bethel board member Sherry Cunningham asked whether, given the threats to HomeSource, the program would still be able to serve Bethel students this fall. HomeSource was forced to cancel summer classes because of the financial uncertainty. Praus-Williamson said that, should the department go ahead with the lower reimbursement rate, HomeSource would likely seek help from the Legislature and possibly apply for charter school status, thus freeing it from the financial rules governing private alternative programs. "So I would say yes, we are opening our doors in the fall," although "adjustments" may be necessary, she said. |
