KATHAK AT THE CROSSROADS: INNOVATION WITHIN TRADITION

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of his California-based company, dancer-teacher Chitresh Das has organized a three-day festival focusing on the most theatrical strain of Indian classical dance and its evolution through two centuries. Das has invited several of kathak's most illustrious practitioners--including Birju Maharaj, Kumudini Lakhia, and Saswati Sen--as well as emerging dancers to participate. The festival will place the emphasis on the kathak solo and the ways in which performers can increase the visibility of their tradition. Academic presentations, lecture-demonstrations, and panel discussions will complement the dancing; and, yes, students from Das' own school will appear, too. WASHINGTON BALLET

Twyla Tharp's exhilarating In the Upper Room, set to propulsive music by Philip Glass, is a dance trip you can never get enough of. Robbins' romantic In the Night is about three couples whose relationships range from serene to rebellious. Both works are so beautiful that you don't have a right to expect them to be on the same program. But they will be, from Sept. 27-Oct. 1 at the Kennedy Center. An added bonus is Oui, Non (above), a premier by artistic director Septime Webre with famed cabaret singer Karen Akers performing live. See www.washingtonballet.org.
