Home box office.

Hollywood has been in a box office funk Funk , Casimir 1884-1967.

for much of the year and everyone seems to have an explanation - from $12 tickets to noisy theaters to just plain bad movies. Several big-budget releases this month and next could turn things around a bit, but the longer-term concern is that DVDs are keeping more movie-lovers home. Plus, there's talk about features being released at the multiplexes and on DVDs at the same time. So the Business Journal asks:

Are you going to the movies less often than you used to?

Steve Auer Senior Vice President/General Manager Sunset/Gower Studios

I prefer watching movies on the big screen. I like the theater experience, with better sound, larger screen and, of course, fresher popcorn. Crying babies and cell phones do bother me but the ads before the movie starts have been pretty effective with persuading people to switch off cell phones. I just saw "The Corpse Bride" about two weeks ago. It was fun, especially the play on color where the dead world was all colorful and bright and living world was dull and monochromatic monochromatic /mono·chro·mat·ic/ (-kro-mat´ik)

Yes, I am going less frequently to the movies.

I just don't have the money and it's just hard to find so much time. I'd rather rent movies from Netflix. It is extremely convenient and cheap and I can watch movies by myself. ! like romantic comedies and I watched "Sex and the City" on DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

I am definitely going less frequently to the movies these days. Work has picked up recently and there's a low between the summer blockbusters and the holiday blockbusters. Also, there is the prohibitive pro·hib·i·tive   also pro·hib·i·to·ry

cost of big-screen movies and concessions. There has just not been any great movie out there recently that justifies the $11 or $12 price of admission. I watch movies these days by renting them from video on demand or on cable. Or, if I wait a while, they come out on one of the premium channels like HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)

I think it is probably the same as before. The pattern has not changed from what is probably once every couple of weeks. If it is with my wife then we watch comedies or romantic comedies and with my kids it is more the action type movies. We go to the movies more than rent them. Typically, if we like a movie we would rather watch it outside than rent it, just to make it an outing and get out of the house.

Yes I am going to the movies less often. I hate to be one of these people who do this but I get DVDs. I also have this satellite connection at home. Truthfully, with theaters getting smaller, the screens are also small and not much better than the huge TV screen at home. I like watching big movies on big screens. The last movie I remember watching in a theater is "Spiderman 2." Now we rent from Netflix and Blockbuster block·bust·er
